Newman Catholic Campus Ministry is hosting an apologetics conference at the University of Akron on Thursday, November 18th. The speakers will be provided by Emmaus Roundtable and the hosts of Truth Matters radio show on WILB 1060 AM.

The topics are:
Reasons to Believe
Does God Exist?
The Christian Worldview and
The Catholic Church Revealed.

The event starts at 6:00 P.M. and ends at 10:00 P.M.
The conference room is located at the Student Union on Carroll Street on the 3rd floor.
Parking is available at the Exchange Street and South Campus Parking Deck.

On Thursday, October 21, 2010, Immaculate Heart of Mary and St. Joseph’s Church will be presenting Pat Bline and his talk “Reasons to Believe” in the All Purpose Room.

There will be time for questions and answers and light refreshments for those in attendance. You can expect a wonderful presentation from this driven and energetic presenter of Catholic teachings, so we hope to see you there.

And, as always, bring a friend, bring a Bible!

What is the Eucharist?

The Eucharist is Jesus the Christ himself, substantially present body, blood, soul
and divinity under the appearance of bread and wine. Jesus is present because he
himself said so: “This is my body…this is my blood of the new and everlasting
covenant.” (Matthew 26)

The Eucharist is prefigured numerous times in the Old Testament. Cain offered a lamb to
God as a sacrifice, Melchizadek offers bread and wine–a type of the Mass–the
Passover Lamb which had to be sacrificed and eaten in order to be saved, and the
manna or bread from heaven, to name a few.

Jesus commands his followers to eat his body and drink his blood. The bread that
he will give is his flesh. This command is contingent for eternal life. Unless you
do this you have no life within you–John 6.

As Jesus is substantially present during Mass and in the Tabernacles of our
Churches, let us make an effort to be present more frequently at Mass and to visit
and thank our Lord while keeping an hour with him.

Why do Catholics confess their sins to priests?

Precisely because Jesus commanded them to. John 20:22, Jesus said, “As the Father sent me, so I send you.” He breathed on them saying, “Receive the Holy Spirit; whose sins you forgive are forgiven, whose sins you retain are retained.” As Jesus forgave sins in his crucified body 2000 years ago, so too His priests forgive sins in the mystical body of Christ, the Church. In 2 Corinthians 5, St. Paul states the apostles were given a ministry of reconciliation. In 1 Corinthians 4:1, the apostles are stewards of the mysteries or sacraments of God.

This concept would not have been foreign to Jewish ears in the 1st century. Leviticus 5 illustrates: a person guilty of sin was to confess, do a sin offering and the priest was to make atonement. This was a type or foreshadowing of the sacrament of penance that we know today.

As Catholics confess their sins, they are forgiven and we are once again in a state of grace, a right relationship with God.

Why do Catholics pray to saints?

Catholics don’t pray to saints as worship, but as petition or in thanksgiving. Catholics honor the saints in heaven precisely because God honored them. The Catechism of the Catholic Church #946 says, “What is the Church if not the assembly of the saints?” The Communion of Saints is the Church. The faithful form one body in Christ, the head of his Church.

Death does not separate Christians, it perfects them. Hebrews 12:22-24 “You have come to Mount Zion, the Heavenly Jerusalem…with innumerable angels in joyful assembly, and the assembly of the first-born enrolled in heaven…and to the spirits of just men made perfect.” James 5 says, “The prayer of a righteous man is powerful in its effect.” Paul commands Christians to pray for one another, “First of all I ask that supplications, prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings be offered for everyone.”

The Catholic doctrine of the Communion of Saints is not difficult to understand once one realizes that all believers are members of the mystical body of Christ. This membership transcends time and space. It involves all Christians those in heaven in Purgatory and alive on Earth. Honoring God’s saints honors God. For just as Saul persecuted the Church, he persecuted Jesus himself, “Saul, Saul why do you persecute Me?” St. Paul later wrote, “For as in one body there are many parts…so we though many are one body in Christ and individually parts of one another.”

Why do Catholics worship Mary?

This common question reveals a fundamental lack of understanding of the Catholic Faith. At no time has the Catholic Church worshiped Mary as a goddess or deity. The Church worships God alone. No other person in human history has had such a unique and intimate role in co-operating in God’s plan of salvation than Mary. We honor Mary in a special way just as Jesus honored her, following his own 4th commandment. Jesus is the only son in history that created his own mother. The archangel Gabriel hails Mary as full of grace in Lk.1:28. Elizabeth proclaims Mary as blessed among women in Lk. 1:42. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, Mary herself proclaims that all generations will call me blessed in Lk. 1:48. The faithful are one in Christ. We are all commanded to pray for one another.
The Church is a universal spiritual family. Jesus gives us his mother to be our mother on the cross, “Woman, behold your son. Son, behold your mother.” Rev. 12:17 confirms Jesus’ words; “The dragon became angry with the woman and went off to make war against her offspring, those who keep the commandments of Jesus.”
When Catholics ask Mary to pray for us, this is not worship, but normal family communication within the body of Christ, in the spiritual order.

Why is the pope in charge of the Catholic Church?

Jesus came into the world not only to die for our sins, but also to establish his Church. Speaking to Peter in Matt. 16 Jesus states: “Upon this rock I will build my Church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth is bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth is loosed in heaven.” Jesus is re-establishing the long exiled kingdom of David. This kingdom, established by Solomon in 1 Kings 4, contains the office of the major-domo of the palace, or the prime minister, in verse 6. This is a foreshadowing of the papal office.
In Matt. 16 Jesus is alluding to Isaiah 22. In Isaiah we see the qualities of the prime minister of the kingdom; holder of the keys, royal authority from the king, the power to bind and loose, a place of honor, and a father figure to Jerusalem. Jesus confers the same authority on Peter.
Jesus, the eternal Davidic King, now reigning in the heavenly Jerusalem, passes on his keys, the symbol of royal authority, to each pope until his Second Coming, to feed the faithful and ensure that they will not be led astray.
